LIVING THINGS Prelistening in Hamburg + Exclusive BlackChester.de Review!

Heute war es endlich soweit. Einige ausgewählte LPUnderground Mitglieder, Gewinner von LinkinPark.de und ich sollten als erste Fans in Deutschland überhaupt das neue Linkin Park Album LIVING THINGS zu hören kriegen!

Für mich ging es schon morgens um 9 Uhr los, da ich eine knappe 500 Kilometer lange Anreise vor mir hatte. Aber wenigstens hatte ich wenig Verkehr und ich kam gut nach Hamburg und fand direkt von Warner Music Germany einen Parkplatz. Obwohl ich über eine Stunde zu früh war, war ich trotzdem nicht der erste, aber das hatte ich auch nicht anders erwartet. Hier ein paar Bilder, wie wir alle zusammen darauf gewartet haben, dass das Prelistening endlich anfängt:

Als wir dann endlich in den Besprechungsraum für das Prelistening gelassen wurden, gab es erstmal für alle Freigetränke und eine Tracklist, zur reinen Orientierung.

Und schließlich wurde uns eröffnet, dass wir die ersten in Deutschland, abgesehen von 5 Warnermitarbeitern, sind, die das Album in voller Länge hören dürfen. Hier nun also meine Eindrücke dazu:

Das Album beginnt gleich mit einem Knall! Die ersten Töne von LOST IN THE ECHO sind zwar ruhig, dies steigert sich aber schnell in elektrischen Fanfaren, die in einen Beat übergehen, der für Linkin Park zwar anfangs ungewohnt ist, aber sofort zum Mitgehen auffordert. Auch die Art, wie Chester den Refrain singt ist deutlich anders als bisher, was aber bei weitem nichts schlechtes heißt und so lässt sich LOST IN THE ECHO durchaus mit Albumopenern wie Don’t Stay vergleichen, welches zwar musikalisch völlig unterschiedlich ist, aber genauso viel Lust auf mehr macht.

Bei dem zweiten Song IN MY REMAINS wird auch schon die Vielseitigkeit von Linkin Park deutlich, so haben wir hier gleich eine solide Rockballade, in der die Synthese mit der elektrischen Grundstruktur sehr gut gelungen ist, obwohl sie später sogar fast die Grundzüge eines Marsches annimmt, da Rob mit seinen Marschtrommeln fast zu Mitklatschen und im Takt laufen anregt, während Mike darüber singt und später von Chester im Chor begleitet wird.

Ich denke zu BURN IT DOWN und LIES GREED MISERY muss ich nichts weiter sagen, da wir alle diese beiden Songs schon kennen. Ich habe dazu nur zwei kleine Bemerkungen, so merkt man bei BURN IT DOWN eindeutig, dass es die erste Single ist, da es durchaus einer der mainstreamfähigsten Songs des Albums ist, während LIES GREED MISERY eher zum Fanfavoriten avancieren könnte, da dieser Song absolut nicht radiotauglich ist, dafür aber quasi dafür geschrieben wurde live performt zu werden!

Kommen wir nun zu I’LL BE GONE dem Track, der in Kooperation mit Owen Pallett entstanden ist, der die Streicher in den Strophen arrangiert hat. Wieder hört man einen deutlichen elektrischen Einschlag, der aber durchaus von Gitarren und viel Bass der Drums untermauert wird, während Chester in sehr gutem Zusammenspiel mit den Streichern und selbst dem elektronischen Bass vor sich hin trällert. Mike ist außerdem bei diesem Track das erste Mal überhaupt nicht stimmlich vertreten, was der Qualität des Songs allerdings keinen Abbruch tut.

CASTLE OF GLASS, der Track, der künftig Teil des Soundtracks des neuen Medal of Honor Parts sein soll, klingt auch wieder deutlich anders. So ist er hauptsächlich auf Drums, schnellen Klavierparts und Synth-Effekten aufgebaut, während Mike ein einer alles anderen als aggressiven Art weniger rappt als singt und dabei im Verlauf des Songs stimmlich immer weiter mit Chester verschmilzt.

Nun kommt eindeutig der Track, der aus den bisherigen Reviews die größten Erwartungen hervorgerufen hat: VICTIMIZED. So geht der Song, wie schon zu erwarten war, laut, verzerrt und Synthies, Drums und verfremdeten Gitarrensounds los, während elektronische Vocals schnell Spannung aufbauen, die dann von Kriegstrommeln unterbrochen werden, zu denen Mike dann zwar eher ruhig rappt, von Chester aber fast ruckartig unterbrochen wird, welcher den Chorus schreit, wodurch Mike in der zweiten Strophe dann auch deutlich aggressiver rappt. Ihr könnt euch also wirklich auf einen aggressiven Track freuen, der Live bestimmt zum absoluten Publikumsliebling avancieren wird.

Viele von euch kennen ja bestimmt No Roads Left eine B-Seite, die auf der Touredition von Minutes To Midnight veröffentlicht wurde. Nun ROADS UNTRAVELED könnte die inoffizielle Fortsetzung dieses Songs sein, welcher mit einfachen Klaviertönen in Zusammenspiel mit einem Glockenspiel, dass sich aber durch das gesamte Lied zieht, beginnt, denn wieder singt Mike, obwohl er im Laufe des Songs unterstützung von Chester kriegt und auch textmäßig passt der Song deutlich zu No Roads Left, da hier wieder die Metapher von Straßen bzw bisher unbegangenen Straßen aufgegriffen wird, obwohl in No Roads Left ja anscheinen keine mehr zu begehen waren.

Unerwarteter könnte der Verlauf von SKIN TO BONE überhaupt nicht sein, so hören wir einen Hip Hop Beat, welcher sehr Synth lastig ist und wir warten einfach nur darauf, dass Mike zu rappen anfängt, stattdessen fängt er an zu singen und wird erst im zweiten Chorus von Chester abgelöst, mit dem er aber im Folgenden zusammen singt. SKIN TO BONE wird wohl der Song des Albums sein, der bei sehr vielen am schlechtesten ankommen wird, obwohl ich ihn persönlich, auch gerade wegen dem unerwarteten Aufbau, sehr Interessant und durchaus gut finde.

Anders als bei SKIN TO BONE bekommt man bei UNTIL IT BREAKS was man erwartet. So startet ein krasser Hip Hop Beat und Mike rappt drauf los, während Chester mit stark verfremdeter Stimme im Chorus zuerst nur von einem Klavier später auch von Synthies begleitet wird. Der zweite Verse wird einigen von euch schon bekannt sein, da Mike diesen auf der gerade zuende gegangen Europa Tour als Ersatz für den Rappart in Waiting For The End gerappt hat um uns somit schonmal einen Einblick in das aktuelle Album zu geben, aber vorsicht, der Part kommt im eigentlichen Song ganz anders rüber und klingt deutlich aggressiver. In der Bridge wartet nun aber eine Überraschung: Eine bisher noch nie gehörte Stimme beginnt zu singen. Zuerst gingen die Theorien zu Phoenix, der im Laufe der Jahre schon häufiger einmal Backing Vocals eingesungen hatte, neueste Interviews belegen aber, dass diese hohe Stimme von Brad stammt, der auch die ursprüngliche Melodie von UNTIL IT BREAKS geschrieben hat, eine durchaus angenehme Überraschung.

Die beiden letzten Tracks TINFOIL und POWERLESS sind wieder einmal zwei Tracks, die in klassischer Linkin Park Manier einfach zu einander gehören, so ist TINFOIL zwar nur eine Interlude, die übrigens in der Albumversion deutlich langsamer ist als die Liveversion, die auf der letzten Tour als Intro für Faint fungierte, gehört aber wie Wake zu Given Up und Foreword zu Don’t Stay eindeutig als Intro zur abschließenden Ballade POWERLESS die auch eindeutig Singlecharakter hat. So beginnt POWERLESS ähnlich wie Iridescent und fließt im Zusammenklang von Drums und Klavier, die das Stück durchgehend begleiten, dahin, während Chester singt. Doch in der Bridge gibt es eine kleine, instrumentale Überraschung, so hört man hier ein Theremin, welches Mike u.a. Live auch für diverse andere Songs einsetzt, welches in gutem Zusammenspiel mit einer Gitarre quasi ein Solo von sich gibt, bevor Chester den letzten Chorus singt.

Abschließend lässt sich sagen, dass Linkin Park wieder einen Schritt nach vorne gemacht haben, dieses Mal aber, wie sie es angekündigt haben, ihre Wurzeln nicht verleugnet haben. So ist LIVING THINGS durchaus wieder ein elektronisches Album, aber dennoch sehr raplastig, so hat Mike also nicht geflunkert, als er angekündigt hat, dass seine komplette Fort Minor Energie mit in das neue Album geflossen sei. Auch Chesters Aggressionen sind in diesem Album wieder deutlicher zum Vorschein gekommen und er schreit wieder weit mehr als auf den Vorgängeralben Minutes To Midnight und A Thousand Suns. Zusammenfassend lässt sich vielleicht noch Folgendes sagen: LIVING THINGS ist wirklich das, was Linkin Park angekündigt haben, eine Weiterentwicklung von A Thousand Suns, die diesmal aber nicht die Wurzeln der Band außer Acht gelassen hat und auch Strömungen aus den ersten drei Alben mit verarbeitet hat. Wer jetzt aber ein neues Hybrid Theory oder Meteora erwartet hat wird enttäuscht, da das Abum zwar deutlich härter als Minutes To Midnight und A Thousand Suns ist, aber durchaus näher am Elektro-Rock als am klassischen Nu-Metal ist, wie die ersten beiden Alben ihn verkörpert haben. Für mich bildet LIVING THINGS die perfekte Brücke zwischen allen bisherigen Linkin Park Veröffentlichungen und es ist so ziemlich genau das, was ich mir von dem neuen Album erwartet habe. Teilweise hat es zwar auch seine Schwächen, aber seien wir mal ehrlich, wer oder was auf dieser Welt ist schon perfekt? Müsste ich Punkte auf einer Skala von 1-10 vergeben liegt LIVING THINGS auf jeden Fall irgendwo zwischen 8 und 10 Punkten, ein genaueres Bild kann ich mir aber erst machen, wenn ich das Album am kommenden Freitag in den Händen halte und erneut hören werde, da ich mich weigere mir vorher Internetstreams oder Leaks anzuhören.

Nachdem nun also das Prelistening beendet war, durften wir sogar einen Track nochmal hören und es handelte sich auf Grund eines Mehrheitsentscheides um LOST IN THE ECHO den grandiosen Opener des Albums.

Nun war die Veranstaltung eigentlich beendet, doch Moment, Warner hatte noch eine Überraschung für uns, so durften wir uns den kompletten Teaser Trailer für die Ausstrahlung des Telekom Streetgigs anschauen, der gerade erst fertig geworden wurde und im Laufe der nächsten Tage noch vor der Ausstrahlung von Donnerstag auf Freitag Nacht online gestellt wird. Dies lag unter anderem auch daran, dass einige der Anwesenden, inklusive mir, darin enthalten waren. Teil des Trailers sind unter anderem Ausschnitte der Show, Interviews mit Mike und Chester, Ausschnitte aus dem Fußballspiel von Linkin Park gegen eine Auswahl von Warner Music, welches sie mit 9:5 für sich entscheiden konnten, was im Übrigen auch der dritte Sieg in Folge für Linkin Park war, und einem kompletten Zusammenschnitt von BURN IT DOWN live aus dem Admiralspalast besteht.

Während den Ausschnitten vom Spiel wird unter anderem deutlich, dass Chester eher der aggressive Spieler ist, während man Phoenix deutlich anmerkt, dass er schon eine geraume Weile Fußball spielt und auch technisch einiges draufhat. Auch kurze Interviews mit Fans nach der Show, so wie kurze Videoausschnitte der Wartenden vor der Halle und der Menge während der Show sind Teil des kurzen Films und ihr könnt euch wirklich darauf freuen, da er sehr unterhaltsam ist. Auch die Street Gigs selbst, die in der Nacht von Donnerstag auf Freitag der kommenden Woche ausgestrahlt werden, sind auf jedenfall ein Muss. Im Übrigen gibt es auch dazu noch eine kleine Info: die TV Ausstrahlungen bei Prosieben und Viva werden jeweils 50 Minuten des Street Gigs abdecken, während der Stream auf http://lp.telekom-streetgigs.de/ am 25.06. ganze 75 Minuten abdecken soll.

Nachdem wir also diesen fast Kurzfilm gesehen hatten war die Veranstaltung dann wirklich beendet, alle Teilnehmer bekamen von Warner Music als Geschenk aber noch eine Promo-CD der aktuellen Single BURN IT DOWN, wie sie sonst nur an Radiosender und andere Medien als Promomaterial verteilt werden. Abschließend möchte ich mich noch einmal bei allen Beteiligten für den schönen Spätnachmittag/Abend bedanken und vor allem bei Warner Music Germany, die uns dieses Prelistening so kurzfristig überhaupt erst ermöglicht haben! Ich hoffe auf ein baldiges Wiedersehen!

Today was the day. Some chosen LPUnderground Members, winners from LinkinPark.de and me were the first fans in Germany, who were allowed to listen to the new Linkin Park record LIVING THINGS!

But my day started already at 9 o’clock in the morning because I had to face an around 500km long travel. At least there was only a little traffic and I came to Hamburg safe and got a parking spot right in front of Warner Music Germany. Although I was more than an hour early I wasn’t the first guys there, but honestly, I didn’t expect it to be different. Here are a few pictures of me and the fans waiting for the prelistening to begin:

When we finally got in the meeting room where the prelistening took place we got free drinks for everyone and a tracklist for the orientation throughout the listening session.

At last the guys at Warner Music informed us, that we were the first people in Germany, besides 5 guys from the warner staff, who were allowed to listen to the full length album. Here are my impressions for you:

The album starts with a bang! The first sounds from LOST IN THE ECHO may be quiet but that changes quickly to electric fanfare which merch into a beat, that might be a little unfamiliar for Linkin Park but you can’t even think about not going with it. Even the style Chester sings the chorus is different from the past, what doesn’t mean anything bad and that’s why I’d say, that LOST IN THE ECHO is on quite the same level as Don’t Stay as an album opener, which might be totally different on the musical level but whets the listeners appetite for more.

On the second song IN MY REMAINS the Linkin Park’s versatility becomes obvious. It’s a solid rock ballad where the synthesis with the electric fundamental structure was really successful although it changes to the general outlines of a march, because Rob and his military drums encourage to clap or walk along to the rhythm while Mike is singing and later joined by Chester chorusing.

I think I don’t need to say anything more to BURN IT DOWN and LIES GREED MISERY since we all already know these songs. I only have to little remarks. While BURN IT DOWN is clearly the first single because it’s one of the mainstream songs of the album, LIES GREED MISERY could become a fan favorite because it’s not really radio friendly but written to be performed live!

Let’s come up with I’LL BE GONE, the track that was developed in cooperation with Owen Pallett, who arranged the strings on the verses. Again we can hear the strong electric impact which is definitely underlined from guitars and reinforced by a strong bass from the drums while Chester warbles away in interaction with the strings and even the electronic Bass. Besides that, this is the first track where Mike doesn’t have a part, what’s not an abandonment to the song’s quality.

CASTLE OF GLASS, the track that’s supposed to be part of the soundtrack of the upcoming Medal of Honor game, sounds distinctly different. It’s based on mainly drums, fast key parts and synth effects while Mike does anything but aggressive rapping that’s almost singing which coalesces with Chester’s vocals in the process of the song.

And now there’s the track that left the highest expectations after the first few reviews: VICTIMIZED. So the song kicks of, how you could expect, loud with distorted synthies, drums and pretty alienated guitarsounds, while electric vocals slowly builds up tension, that gets cut of by war drums all of a sudden to which Mike raps rather calm when Chester cuts him off with the screaming chorus what leads Mike to rap in a way more aggressive manner. So you can really look forward to an aggressive track, that might be one of crowd favorites in the near future.

Many of you may know No Roads Left, a b-side, that got release on the tour edition of Minutes To Midnight. Well, ROADS UNTRAVELED could be the inofficial sequel to that song, which begins with simple keys in interaction with a glockenspiel that runs through the whole song, while Mike starts singing although he gets support from Chester throughout the song the lyrics would clearly fit a sequel to No Roads Left, because the metaphor of the roads or rather untraveled roads gets picked up although there was none left to go in No Roads Left.

The progress of SKIN TO BONE could not be any more unexpected. We’re listening to a hip hop beat with a lot of synths and wait for Mike to start rapping but instead he starts singing and we have to wait for the second chorus for Chester to relieve him, but sings along in what follows. SKIN TO BONE might be the song that will approach many fans as the weakest song of the album, whereas I personally think that the unexpected structure is what makes the song pretty interesting and I really like it.

Unlike SKIN TO BONE you get what you expect on UNTIL IT BREAKS. It kicks off with a rad hip hop beat while Mike startes rapping while Chester’s highly altered voice gets accompanied by some keys and later on synthies on the chorus. Some of you might already know the second verse which Mike rapped over the Waiting For The End on the just finished european tour to give us a little insight on the new album, but watch out, the part sounds way different and way more aggressive on the actual song than on the rap part of Waiting For The End. In the bridge comes up a little surprise you would not have expected: A til now unknown voice begins to sing. The first theories at the prelistening were, that Phoenix did these vocals, who already did some backing vocals in the past, but the most recent interviews prove, that that high voice comes from Brad, who wrote the original melody of UNTIL IT BREAKS, a pleasent suprise if you ask me.

The last two tracks TINFOIL and POWERLESS are once again two tracks in a classical Linkin Park manner that belong together. So is TINFOIL not only an interlude, which is way slower than the live version, that acted as the intro for Faint on the last tour, but it’s for POWERLESS what Wake was for Given Up and Foreword for Don’t Stay. It’s an interlude and the intro for POWERLESS that starts pretty similar to Iridescent and Burning In The Skies in the beginning and flows along in consonance of drums and keys, which accompany us throughout the track, while Chester sings. But the bridge has a little, instrumental surprise: We can here a theremin, an instrument that Mike already used for several other songs live and that theremin does some kind of solo in interplay with a guitar before Chester sings the last chorus.

Concluding I can say, that Linkin Park did another huge step forward, but they didn’t deny their roots this time, as it was announced. LIVING THINGS is an electric album again, but it’s pretty rap-heavy so Mike did not joke when he said, that he put all of his Fort Minor energy in that new release. Chester’s aggressions are another element that was kinda missing in the previous albums Minutes To Midnight and A Thousand Suns. Concluding I may say the following: LIVING THINGS is, what Linkin Park announced, a development of A Thousand Suns, that doesn’t neglect the Bands roots and processed streams of the first 3 albums. But people who expect a new Hybrid Theory or Meteora might be disappointed, the album might be a lot heavier than Minutes To Midnight and A Thousand Suns but it’s closer to Elektro-Rock than to the classical Nu-Metal that the first two albums impersonated. For me LIVING THINGS is the perfekt bridge between all previous Linkin Park releases and it’s pretty exactly what I expected it to be. Of course it has it’s weaknesses, but for real, what’s perfect in this world? If I had to give points on a scale from 1-10, LIVING THINGS would definitely be somewhere between 8 and 10 points, but to get a clearer picture of my opinion I can’t wait to hold the album in my hands next friday and I really refuse to listen to any prerelease streams or leaks this time.

After the prelistening we were allowed to choose a track to listen to again and the majority decided, that we had to listen to LOST IN THE ECHO, the superb opener of the album, again.

Now the event should have ended, but wait a second, Warner had a little surprise for us, so we were allowed to watch the whole new image trailer for the highlight stream of the Telekom Street Gigs, that just got finished and will be released in a few days before the highlights air in the night from thursday to friday on german TV. The main reason they showed it to us was, that several attending people, including me, are in the trailer. The trailer consists of little excerpts from the show, interviews with Mike and Chester, clips from the football game that Linkin Park played against some players from Warner Music, that Linkin Park won with 9:5 which was the third win in a row for Linkin Park, and a complete compilation of BURN IT DOWN live from the show.

During the clips from the football game we could clearly see, that Chester is a rather aggressive player while you can see that Phoenix playes football for quite a while now and is pretty badass technically. Even short interviews from the fans after the show where cut into the trailer, as well as cutscenes from the waiting line in front of the venue before the show and you can look forward to it, it’s pretty entertaining. The highlights from the Telekom Street Gig in Berlin will be aired in the night from thursday to friday in the upcoming week on Prosieben, a german TV broadcaster, and it’s definitely a must. And btw: the TV broadcast on Prosieben and VIVA will both air an around 50 minute highlight clip from the Street Gigs while the Stream on http://lp.telekom-streetgigs.de/ on June 25th will cover around 75 minutes.

After this almost short film the event was really finished and all participants got a BURN IT DOWN promo cd as gift from Warner Music Germany that usually only radio stations and press gets. Here you can see the final group pictures from that event:

In conclusion I only want to say thanks to all people who were involved in that nice afternoon/evening and mainly Warner Music Germany who made that last-minute prelistening possible! I hope to see you again soon!
